General Motors confirmed today that it would build a compact pickup truck for its HUMMER brand, and that the truck would be built at its Louisiana assembly plant.

The H3T, GM confirmed, will be assembled in Shreveport, La., alongside the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The company will spend $73 million to upgrade the plant to accommodate H3T production.

The new pickup, GM says, is larger than a typical midsize truck, and will offer a fully functional truck bed. A full range of accessories will be offered when the H3T shows up at dealers in the third quarter of 2008.

The H3T bowed in concept form as a two-door at the 2004 Los Angeles auto show, where Ed Welburn, General Motors North American vice president of design, said it represented a "youthful, smaller, more affordable" direction than today's HUMMER. The production version is expected to be a four-door offering along the lines of the larger H2 SUT.

The H3T likely will offer the larger displacement 3.5-liter in-line five-cylinder found in the H3 wagon, as well as the new 5.3-liter V-8 also stuffed into the existing H3.

Stay tuned for more on the H3T.
